Long combination vehicles
A long combination vehicle (LCV) is a truck configuration that uses a single tractor to pull 2 or more trailers at extended lengths. These units are significantly longer than standard commercial vehicles and can only operate under strict conditions on approved highways.
LCVs help move large volumes of freight efficiently, but because of their length and operating characteristics, they require specialized driver training, specific vehicle standards and a valid LCV permit.
Permit and requirements
Carriers must obtain an LCV permit before operating LCVs in the province of Alberta.
To qualify, carriers must pass a carrier review and must maintain a “Satisfactory (audited)” or better Safety Fitness Rating. In addition, all drivers must complete the required LCV training.
Driver training, vehicle specifications and all other operating requirements are outlined in the Attached Conditions for the Operation of LCVs.
