Lac La Biche Forest Area - May 30, 2026

Very High wildfire danger

The wildfire danger for the Lac La Biche Forest Area is very high due to continued dry conditions. A wildfire can easily ignite and quickly become out of control in these conditions. Use caution with any outdoor activity that could spark a wildfire.   

Wildfire Situation 

LWF059 was discovered on May 29 and is currently burning out of control. The wildfire is estimated at 422 hectares (ha) and is burning 10 km southwest of Conklin. Alberta Wildfire had firefighters, a night-vision equipped helicopter and machines working on this wildfire overnight. 

Suppression efforts continued today with support by firefighters, airtankers and helicopters with buckets. 

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has put an evacuation alert in place for the hamlet of Conklin. For more information, please go to the RMWB website.

LWF060 is estimated at 1,000 ha and is currently burning out of control. Night vison equipped helicopters worked overnight focusing on suppression efforts on the east side of this wildfire. 

Today, firefighters, helicopters equipped with buckets, and heavy equipment will be working to build a fire guard around this wildfire.

LWF061 is currently burning out of control and is estimated at 15 ha. This wildfire is burning southeast of the community of Janvier. 

LWF062 is burning out of control and is estimated at 10 ha. This wildfire is burning 19 km north of the community of Janvier. 

LWF065 is currently burning out of control and is estimated at 78 ha. This wildfire is burning 30 km southwest of the community of Conklin. 

There are currently no threats to communities. 

Since January 1, 2026 there have been 65 wildfires in the Lac La Biche Forest Area.

Wildfire smoke 

Wildfires in the Lac La Biche Forest Area may cause smoky conditions in some areas today. Call Health Link at 811 if you’re having respiratory problems due to smoke. Visit FireSmoke Canada to see where wildfire smoke is coming from. 

Fire advisory

Due to the forecasted weather conditions, a fire advisory is now in effect in the Lac La Biche Forest Area.

Under this advisory current fire permits remain valid. Requests for new fire permits will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. 

Allowed:

  • Safe wood campfires.
  • Backyard firepits 
  • Propane fire pits and natural gas-powered appliances 
  • Charcoal and wood-burning devices with an on/off switch (barbecues, smokers, stoves) 
  • Indoor wood fires 
  • Open flame oil devices 

Off-highway vehicles are not restricted. 

The advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve.
