Wildfire update

Lac La Biche Forest Area - May 20, 2025

High wildfire danger

The fire danger is high in the Lac La Biche Forest Area due to warm temperatures and strong winds.

Wildfires can start and spread very easily in these conditions. Please use caution if you are spending time or working outside, as any spark could cause a wildfire to ignite and spread quickly.

There has been some rain in the southern part of the forest area, but the northern portion is still dry.

Since January 1, 2025, there have been 86 wildfires in the Lac La Biche Forest Area, burning a total of 661 hectares (ha). There are currently 4 active wildfires burning in the forest area.

All active wildfires in the forest area are under control. Visit the wildfire status dashboard for additional information.

There are no threats to communities or structures at this time.

Mutual aid wildfires

Alberta Wildfire is assisting with 2 wildfires that are located outside of the Lac La Biche Forest Area (LCU002 and LCU005).

A mutual aid wildfire is a wildfire that starts outside of the Forest Protection Area and assistance is being provided by Alberta Wildfire to the lead agency.

These wildfires typically start in a municipal district but become large enough that municipal firefighters may require additional resources to help support it.

Fire ban

A fire ban is in effect for most parts of the Lac La Biche Forest Area. Under this ban, all outdoor wood fires are prohibited and existing fire permits are suspended.

Prohibited:

  • All outdoor wood fires, including wood campfires on public and private land, designated firepits and backyard firepits
  • Barbecue charcoal briquettes
  • Fireworks and exploding targets

Allowed:

  • Propane fire pits and natural gas-powered appliances
  • Indoor wood fires
  • Open flame oil devices

The fire ban will remain in effect until conditions improve.

See the fire ban poster and the fire ban factsheet for more information.

The southern part of the Lac La Biche Forest Area is under a fire advisory. Under this advisory:

  • Fire permit requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Safe campfires are allowed.

To see the boundaries of the fire advisory visit Alberta Fire Bans.
