Wildfire update

Lac La Biche Forest Area - April 19, 2025

Moderate wildfire danger

Due to the higher temperatures, rain and rapid snow melt, the wildfire danger is currently moderate in the Lac La Biche forest area. Over the next few weeks the wildfire danger level can change quickly due to unpredictable spring weather conditions. It's important to always use caution when doing any burning activities.

 

High winds in the area

Winds are expected to be high in the Lac La Biche Forest Area today.  Winds will be coming out of the west at 20 KM/H with gusts of up to 40-50 KM/H. 

Wildfire situation

Since January 1, 2025, there have been 21 wildfires in the Lac La Biche Forest Area burning a total of 353 hectares (ha) There are four active wildfires currently burning in the forest area.

LWF009 - Is classified as under control and has burned an estimated 244 ha. This wildfire is burning approximately 6 km north of the community of North Meadows. There are no immediate risks to people or the community but smoke may be visible.

LWF020 - Is classified as under control and has burned an estimated 55 ha. This wildfire is located in the South meadows area but poses no threat to people or the community.

LWF021 - Is classified as being held and has burned an estimated 18 ha. This fire is also located in the south meadows are and is 2.5 km west of Nokohoo Road. There are no threats to people or the community.

Firefighters continue to work in these areas to fully extinguish the wildfires.

Fire permits required

Fire permits are now required for burning within the Forest Protection Area, except campfires.

Fire permits are free and can be requested online. You may also request your fire permit by calling the Lac La Biche Forest Area office at 780-623-5388.

Fire advisory

A fire advisory is in place in the Lac La Biche Forest Area due to dry and windy conditions. Under this advisory, new fire permits will be issued on a case by case basis. All existing permits remain valid, however, renewals may not be granted. Safe wood campfires are not affected by this advisory.
