Overview

We gathered input from unions and unionized employers on how to implement changes that ensure unions share financial statements with their members, and dues payers can choose whether to pay union dues towards funding political activities, social causes, charities, non-governmental organizations, or organizations supportive of a political party.

These changes were introduced as part of the Restoring Balance in Alberta’s Workplace Act in July 2020.

Following stakeholder input, we developed regulations to provide more details on the rules in the act, and to help unions and employers implement new processes.

Discussion guide

Discussion guides were sent to the following groups to gather input to inform the development of a regulation:

  • For union financial disclosure: unions, labour associations
  • For union dues election: unions, labour associations, unionized employers, unionized employer associations

Outcomes

Regulations under the Labour Relations Code and other pieces of related legislation were developed and the related sections in the Restoring Balance in Alberta’s Workplace Act have been proclaimed. Related legislation includes the Public Service Employee Relations Act, the Police Officers Collective Bargaining Act, the Public Education Collective Bargaining Act, and the Post-Secondary Learning Act.
