Overview

As part of Alberta’s ongoing curriculum renewal process, Alberta Education and Childcare is continuing development of new curriculum for junior and senior high school subjects.

Between January and May 2025, education partner organizations, teacher curriculum consultation groups, First Nations, Métis and Inuit partners, community organizations and subject experts provided input to inform curriculum development for mathematics, social studies, physical education and wellness, and career education and financial literacy.

We will continue a phased approach to develop curriculum for the remaining grades and subjects. This approach aims to facilitate kindergarten to Grade 12 (K to 12) curriculum renewal, while ensuring sufficient time for system readiness. Information about future engagement opportunities will be shared as it becomes available.

Grades 7 to 9 draft curriculum

Alberta’s government continues to deliver on its commitment to provide students with new and updated curriculum.

In June 2025, draft curriculums were released for 7 to 9:

  • mathematics
  • physical education and wellness
  • social studies

Draft 7 to 9 curriculums can be viewed on new LearnAlberta.

Draft career education and financial literacy curriculum for grades 7 to 9 will be released later in 2025.

During the 2025/26 school year, optional field testing of curriculum will occur prior to optional classroom piloting in 2026/27. Mandatory implementation of these 7 to 9 curriculums will take place in the 2027/28 school year.

Curriculum information

Field testing

Unlike piloting, field testing is not about testing entire learning outcomes or the whole draft curriculum. This optional phase is used to gather early feedback on selected portions of draft curriculum and materials.

School boards will nominate teachers to participate in field testing focus groups:

  • Selected teachers will test parts of draft curriculum chosen by Education and Childcare.
  • The teachers will provide feedback during focus groups meetings.
    • This feedback will inform curriculum refinements ahead of classroom piloting.

School boards will have time at the beginning of the school year to review draft curriculum before they decide whether to commit to field testing. We will invite school boards interested in field testing to submit an expression of interest in September 2025.

    Development

In January 2025, we began engaging on draft curriculum content for:

    • 7 to 9 mathematics and social studies
    • 7 to 10 physical education and wellness
    • CALM, including career education, financial literacy, basic life skills and home maintenance

As part of these engagements, education partner organizations, teacher curriculum consultation groups, First Nations, Métis and Inuit partners, community organizations, and subject area specialists provided feedback on the course organization for grades 7 to 10 physical education and wellness, career education, financial literacy, basic life skills and home maintenance.

Partners noted the importance of enhanced career education and financial literacy in junior and senior high school. Based on the feedback provided, high school curriculum content for these subjects will continue to be refined and will be released for engagement at a later date.
