“Alberta’s government welcomes the joint statement released by Natural Resources Canada and India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Alberta produces 97 per cent of Canada’s energy, holds the fourth-largest oil reserves in the world and ranks ninth globally for natural gas reserves, with resources managed under provincial stewardship. Alberta’s energy sector is key to building long-term partnerships with India and meeting the world’s growing demand for secure, responsibly produced energy.
“At India Energy Week 2026, I was pleased to lead a delegation of 27 energy companies from Alberta, building on the province’s consistent presence at this global forum and showcasing its capabilities on a global stage. This engagement reflects Alberta’s sustained commitment to strengthening energy ties with India.
“For years, Alberta’s government has undertaken sustained efforts to strengthen ties with India through our on-the-ground international office in New Delhi, trade missions and ongoing engagement with government and industry leaders. This work is underscored by the renewed Canada–India Ministerial Energy Dialogue.
“Alberta’s leadership in energy, natural gas supply and low-carbon solutions strongly aligns with India’s long-term economic and energy-security priorities. Through this work, Alberta has shown it is a stable, reliable partner with regulatory certainty, expertise and an innovation-driven approach. These efforts have made Alberta India’s preferred energy partner, and we will continue working with federal partners to expand trade, support Indigenous economic participation and enhance market access.
“This collaboration will create jobs, drive economic growth and deliver lasting prosperity for communities across Alberta, including Indigenous communities, while strengthening the Alberta-India relationship and benefiting Canada as a whole.”
- Minister of Indigenous Relations, Rajan Sawhney
“The demand for Alberta’s responsibly produced oil and gas is growing, and we are working to meet it. We are excited to see Ottawa and India working towards an agreement to increase our access to this critical market – the third-largest importer of oil and fourth-largest importer of LNG in the world. Alberta’s government has been working hard to develop this relationship for a long time.
“To take full advantage of this agreement, we need to build a high-capacity oil pipeline to Canada’s northwest coast. We are making progress on putting together an application for the federal Major Projects Office that would see Indigenous communities partner with private industry to build this pipeline.
“In 2025, we shipped 81,000 barrels per day of Canadian crude to India through the Gulf Coast. A new pipeline would cut shipping time in half and open up economic growth for Alberta and all of Canada.
“It has never been more important to diversify our trading partners, and this agreement would be a major step towards this priority.”
- Minister of Energy and Minerals, Brian Jean
