Overview
The Women in Technical and Applied Arts Scholarship is an annual scholarship that supports women pursuing post-secondary education in technical roles within cultural industries, who are often underrepresented in these fields.

Notification timelines may vary depending on the volume of applications received. All notifications are sent by email to the contact listed in the application.
Funding
- $50,000 is available for this scholarship.
- 20 individuals will receive $2,500 each for their studies.
Eligibility requirements
The Women in Technical and Applied Arts scholarship is an annual program. Applicants can apply once during each intake.
Applicants must meet the below criteria to be considered eligible.
Eligible applicants:
- Must identify as a woman.
- Must be studying in technical roles for careers in cultural industries, in programs like audio or film production, game design, and more, where they are generally underrepresented.
- Refer to the list of examples of program that fall under the criteria – note this list is non-exhaustive.
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person (visa students are not eligible).
- Must be a resident of Alberta. To be considered, one of the following conditions must apply:
- one parent, or legal guardian has maintained permanent residence in Alberta for at least 12 consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies.
- Alberta is the last place the student has lived for 6 consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies.
- the student’s spouse or partner has maintained permanent residence in Alberta for 6 consecutive months prior to the person attending post-secondary.
- There is no age limit.
- Applicants can apply to the Women in STEM, Persons Case and Women in Technical and Applied Arts scholarships. However, multiple scholarships cannot be awarded during the same calendar year.
Ineligible applicants
- High school students– even those who have been accepted into an upcoming WTAA related program – are not eligible to apply. You must be a post-secondary student currently enrolled in and attending courses.
- Students registered in short-term, part-time continuing education courses are not eligible to apply.
- Visa students are not eligible.
How to apply
Step 1. Read the guidelines
Step 2. Request a GATE Front Office account
- Once intake has opened, applicants may request an account via the link to the request page.
Step 3. Prepare supporting documents and information to upload in GATE Front Office
- The following documents are required as part of your application:
- Proof of enrolment (must include official logo of post secondary institution, must be for current academic year and current term).
- Two references (2 separate PDFs).
- In addition, you will need your:
- Social Insurance Number
- Alberta Student Number
Step 4. Complete your application for funding in GATE Front Office
After you apply
- Notifications will be emailed to the address provided when setting up your GATE Front Office account, approximately 3 months after intake deadline.
Incomplete applications will not be accepted. All decisions on scholarship applications are final and no appeals will be considered.
