Overview

Alberta is renewing the Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K to 12) curriculum and the development process is happening over a number of years.

Curriculum refinement

Alberta’s government is committed to providing curriculum that equips students with scientific knowledge, and skills in technology, financial literacy, wellness and career planning. The development of the draft science 7 to 9 curriculum, and curriculums for CALM 10 and physical education and wellness 10 is a significant milestone. By integrating topics like artificial intelligence, computer science and money management, Alberta’s renewed curriculum will help students prepare for high-demand jobs in an evolving economy.

We are inviting school boards to provide further feedback on new draft curriculum through optional field testing in the 2026/27 school year.  Optional piloting of these draft curriculums will occur in 2027/28, followed by mandatory implementation in 2028/29. We will continue to work with teachers and our education partners to support a successful curriculum rollout.

School boards have the option to pilot updated draft grades 7 to 9 career education and financial literacy, mathematics, physical education and wellness and social studies curriculums during the 2026/27 school year. During classroom piloting, teachers may pilot some or all of the draft curriculum. The curriculum will continue to be refined based on teacher feedback, ahead of mandatory implementation in September 2027.

Implementation supports for teachers and students

As part of Alberta’s ongoing curriculum renewal, Alberta’s government committed $41 million in 2026/27 to support curriculum renewal, including classroom piloting and implementation. 

We also provide teachers across the province with implementation supports and learning and teaching resources on New LearnAlberta, including:

  • final K to 6 curriculum and draft 7 to 9 curriculum with a centralized collection of learning and teaching resources that align with the new Kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum implementation timelines 
  • the Provincial Resource Review Guide, available in the Curriculum Implementation Information Hub at New LearnAlberta, to support the selection of learning and teaching resources that are aligned with curriculum
  • bridging documents to help transition from the previous programs of study to the new curriculum
  • videos and support documents with an overview and orientation to the new curriculum
  • recordings of professional learning sessions to support draft curriculum and curriculum renewal

Curriculum development history (2019 to 2025)

  • 2020/2021

    • Nineteen Elders and subject matter experts provided advice based on their subject matter expertise and lived experience.

    • The K to 6 curriculum working group, consisting of about 100 teachers from across Alberta, met virtually to discuss the draft curriculum.

    • Approximately 30 Faculty of Education deans and professors from Alberta’s post-secondary institutions reviewed the draft K to 6 curriculum.

    The draft K to 6 curriculum was publicly released online on March 29, 2021, for review. Since then, Albertans have provided feedback many ways, including:

    • an online survey from March 2021 until February 2022
    • virtual sessions hosted by Education and Childcare staff between May 2021 and February 2022
    • virtual engagement sessions where nearly 600 participants shared diverse viewpoints on each subject area and the draft social studies design blueprint in February 2022

  • 2021/2022

    • In June 2021, Education and Childcare began conversations with education partners to share information and discuss the draft K to 6 curriculum.
    • Education and Childcare provided approximately $800,000 in grants to support partner groups in conducting consistent and coordinated engagements with their communities so their unique perspectives could be heard.
    • Education and Childcare established an advisory group of education and curriculum implementation experts to provide advice and recommendations on the implementation strategy and timelines for a new K to 6 curriculum.

  • 2022/2023

    • New K to 6 curriculum for English language arts and literature, mathematics and physical education and wellness implemented in schools.
    • Draft K to 6 curriculum for science, French first language and literature and French immersion language arts and literature released.
       

  • 2023/2024

    • New K to 3 science, French language arts and literature (FFLL and FILAL) implemented in schools.

    From September 2023 to January 2024, we engaged with more than 900 education partners, teachers, multicultural organizations, Indigenous and francophone communities and other education specialists to inform development of a draft K to 12 social studies subject overview and the content of the draft K to 6 social studies curriculum.

    On March 14, 2024, we released a draft K to 12 social studies subject overview and the draft K to 6 social studies curriculum. Albertans completed more than 2,900 online feedback forms to provide input on key learnings within the draft K to 12 social studies curriculum. Find out what they said:

    On April 26, 2024, we released draft K to 6 social studies curriculum to help school authorities prepare for optional classroom piloting.

  • 2024/2025

    • New grades 4 to 6 science, French language arts and literature (FFLL and FILAL) implemented in schools 
    • Starting in September 2024, 62 school authorities and over 2100 teachers piloted draft K to 6 social studies curriculum in classrooms and provided additional feedback.
    • Feedback was reviewed and considered from all engagement activities and classroom piloting, as well as research and best practices, to finalize the new social studies curriculum.
    • Final K to 6 social studies was released in May 2025. 
    • From January to the end of April 2025, we engaged with our partners to gather feedback on draft 7 to 9 curriculums for career education and financial literacy, mathematics, physical education and wellness, and social studies. Feedback was also collected on high school career education, financial literacy, home maintenance and physical education and wellness content. 
    • June 2025, draft 7 to 9 curriculums for mathematics, physical education and wellness and social studies curriculum released for field testing in 2025/26.

  • 2025/2026

    • K to 3 social studies implemented in schools
    • In November 2025, career progressions and draft 7 to 9 career education and financial literacy curriculum was released.
    • School boards and teachers participated in optional field testing of draft grades 7 to 9 career education and financial literacy, mathematics, physical education and wellness, and social studies.
    • From January to March 2026, we gathered stakeholder feedback on draft curriculum for grades 7 to 9 science and grade 10 career education and financial literacy, and physical education and wellness.
    • June 2026, release of updated draft curriculums for grades 7 to 9 career education and financial literacy, mathematics, physical education and wellness, and social studies, in preparation for optional classroom piloting in 2026/27. 
    • Fall 2026, release of draft curriculums for science 7 to 9 and career and life management 10, and physical education and wellness 10, in preparation for optional field testing in 2026/27.
