Grant to support survivors of gender-based violence

These funds will be available to programs to strengthen community services that support gender-based violence survivors.

Overview

The Community Pathways to Justice grant supports Building on our Strengths: Alberta’s 10-year Strategy to End Gender-Based Violence by working together to support survivors of and all those impacted by gender-based violence. The grant will support and strengthen front-line programs that address gender-based violence by:

  • enhancing community-based navigation supports
  • strengthening community-based legal clinics
  • establishing or expanding restorative justice services
  • expanding multilingual legal literacy and advocacy services
  • supporting prevention, diversion and reintegration efforts
  • improving accessibility and effectiveness of gender-based violence related services

This strategy supports survivors, addresses root causes and creates long lasting change.

Funding

The Alberta government is investing $2.5 million into the Community Pathways to Justice: Grant to Support Survivors of Gender-Based Violence.

The funding is part of Alberta’s 4-year, $54 million bilateral agreement with the federal government that was signed in 2023.

These funds will be available to eligible programs that support and empower survivors of gender-based violence and improve accessibility and effectiveness of services related to gender-based violence.

Grants are being offered in a 2-stream funding model.

  • Stream 1 provides ongoing support for existing programs who received Community Pathways to Justice grant funding in 2025-26. Funding ranges from $75,000 to $200,000 per applicant.
  • Stream 2 funding is available to new organizations who did not receive Community Pathways to Justice grant funding in 2025-26. Funding ranges from $50,000 to $100,000 per applicant.

Funding is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. Grant applications may not be funded, or may be funded partially.

Eligibility

This grant is intended for program activities that serve survivors of gender-based violence. A program may be eligible if it:

  • supports front-line programs that address the safety, well-being and diverse needs of individuals affected by gender-based violence in the justice system through sensitive and client-centered approaches
  • empowers survivors, from a front-line perspective, with improved access to legal supports, including legal advice, advocacy and system navigation services
  • improves the accessibility and effectiveness of services related to gender-based violence across criminal, civil and family law systems, including restorative justice, system navigation and integrated supports
  • delivers justice services to those affected by gender-based violence
  • improves coordination in legal, social and community services which results in reducing barriers for survivors
  • Eligible applicants

    Applicants must be based out of and located in Alberta and be one of the following:

    • registered not-for-profit organization and/or registered charity (in good standing)
    • municipalities, provided they apply with a non-profit organization or registered society acting as the required fiscal agent
    • First Nation, Otipemisiwak Métis Government, or a Metis Settlement
  • Ineligible applicants

    • individuals
    • community organizations that are not registered not-for-profits or charities
    • academic institutions
    • for-profit organizations
    • crown corporations
    • police services
    • publicly funded institutions
  • Eligible expenses

    Funding is for direct program costs incurred during the term of the grant agreement only, which may include:

    • salaries, wages and benefits for individuals primarily performing project-related duties as outlined in the grant agreement
    • program delivery costs (supplies and materials)
    • advertising, public awareness and marketing
    • communications
    • travel and meetings
    • small capital purchases (less than $3,000)
    • office operations (maximum 5% of total grant funding)
    • other ongoing direct operating costs as identified by the applicant
  • Ineligible expenses

    • training
    • community engagements solely for the purpose of program development
    • workshops and conferences
    • vehicle purchases or lease
    • lobbying or advocacy activities
    • large capital purchases ($3,000 or over)
    • debt reduction, financing charges and/or interest payments on loans
    • facility upgrades, renovations, construction
    • retroactive costs incurred prior to the term of the grant agreement
    • flow-through funds to another organization
    • bursaries, scholarships, charitable donations, or donor recognition

How to apply

Step 1. Read the guidelines

Applicants should review the Community Pathways to Justice grant guidelines.

The application package must be fully complete, and all questions must be answered. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Late submissions received after June 23, 2026, will not be accepted, and extensions will not be granted.

Applications are reviewed against the eligibility criteria and supporting documentation provided. Organizations may be contacted if further information or clarification is required.

After you apply

Applicants who are approved will be notified via email with a letter from the Minister of Justice’s office.

You will receive a copy of the grant agreement to sign. Sign and return the grant agreement by email to: [email protected].

Funding will be disbursed upon grant execution and commencement of the agreement.

Reporting

Eligible programs must be able to report on the following applicable deliverables during the grant period:

  • number of participants served by the program
  • population demographics served by the program
  • service delivery times
  • number of referrals made to outside services
  • number and types of stakeholders involved in the program
  • satisfaction levels of program participants

Recipients are required to submit interim and final reports that align with outcomes, reporting timelines and requirements set out in the grant agreement. See the program guidelines for reporting requirements and contents required in the reports.

Final reports are due on or before October 14, 2027 (or 60 days following the termination of the grant agreement).

Grant recipients

Grant recipients must:

  • expend funds as approved within the term of the grant agreement, maximum of one year
  • return any unspent funds to the government at the end of the grant term
  • submit their final report within 60 days of the termination or expiry of the grant agreement
