Overview
The fisheries regulations survey was an opportunity for Albertans to share feedback on proposed updates to provincial legislation that oversees aspects of fish resource management, such as licensing and definitions of terms, such as aquatic invasive species and bait.
Proposed updates to the General Fisheries (Alberta) Regulation and Fisheries (Ministerial) Regulation follow 5 themes:
- providing additional opportunities
- ensuring fairness
- conservation
- alignment
- improving clarity
This survey was different from annual engagements on rules for sportfishing and domestic fishing licences, which propose changes to topics like catch and size limits or closed times.
Government usually updates the fisheries regulations every few years, as part of the ongoing need to ensure good governance.
Input received
Albertans shared their input through an online survey between August 10 to September 1, 2020.
Outcomes
Feedback informed amendments to the Fisheries (Alberta) Act and the General Fisheries (Alberta) Regulation, which were updated 2022.
