Wildfire update

Fort McMurray Forest Area - May 20, 2026

Very High wildfire danger

The fire danger is very high in Fort Smith and high across the remainder of the Fort McMurray Forest Area. Wildfires can easily start and spread in these conditions. Be cautious when spending time outdoors and avoid activities that could potentially spark a wildfire.

Wildfire situation

Since January 1, 2026, there have been 8 wildfires in the forest area.

Hazard reduction burning

Alberta Wildfire has completed several hazard reduction burns over the past few weeks as part of an enhanced wildfire risk reduction program. Additional burns are planned in the coming weeks, pending suitable weather and site conditions.

The remaining hazard reduction burns are currently planned for the following areas:

Fort Chipewyan (Regional)
Fort Smith (Regional)

Firefighters in yellow protective gear use drip torches and portable fire pumps to manage a controlled burn in a hilly area surrounded by thick, fog-like smoke under a clear blue sky.

Off-highway vehicle safety

An off-highway vehicle (OHV) can cause a wildfire. You can reduce the risk by following these simple steps:

  • Before you ride, clean out hot spots and remove debris from your machine.
  • After riding through muskeg or tall grass, stop and remove any build-up from your machine.
  • Carry firefighting equipment such as a small shovel, collapsible pail or fire extinguisher.
  • Wash your OHV and keep it clean. Do not wash in streams and creeks.
  • Make sure your muffler and spark arrestor are working properly.
  • Stop frequently. Take the time to knock debris from your machine’s hot spots. If the debris is smouldering, soak it, stir it, and soak it again to make sure it is extinguished.
