Wildfire update

Fort McMurray Forest Area - May 02, 2025

High wildfire danger

Due to increasing temperatures expected over the weekend, the wildfire danger level is high in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.

Even with the rain received earlier this week, it doesn't take long for grass and small twigs to dry out. Always ensure you're exercising caution when conducting any burning activities. Remember that fire permits are required for any burning other than a campfire.

There have been 6 wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area since January 1, 2025. If you see smoke or flame in the forest please call 310-FIRE (3473) to report it.

Hazard reduction burns

Hazard reduction burns (HRBs) are used to remove wildfire fuel from around communities as a wildfire prevention effort. This combined with other mitigative tactics, including using FireSmart techniques around your home and, if required, an activated wildfire response, can help to ensure a more prepared community against wildfires.

Alberta Wildfire staff plan to continue a hazard reduction burning project near the Saprae Creek area as long as weather conditions remain ideal. They are working to complete a 25-hectare strip running north to the Clearwater River, east of Saprae Creek. You may see smoke and crews working in the area.

Firefighters constantly monitor the weather to assess if controlled burns can be done safely. These burns are only completed by experienced firefighters, with the support of helicopters.

As we start getting consistently warmer temperatures and grass turns from brown to green, our window for hazard reduction burns start to close. At any time, if weather conditions become too hazardous, the burns will not be completed. See the hazard reduction burn pamphlet for more information.

We've updated the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard. This interactive map and display provides wildfire locations, statistics and more in one convenient location. The Alberta Wildfire Status app remains the best option to view wildfire information on a mobile device.

Fire permits

Fire permits are free and can be requested online, for any burning other than a campfire. You may also request your fire permit by calling the Fort McMurray permit line at 780-743-7125.

Stay informed of fire restrictions and bans by checking Alberta Fire Bans.

Off-highway vehicles (OHVs)

Off-highway vehicles can cause wildfires. Remember to carry firefighting equipment such as a small shovel, collapsible pail or fire extinguisher.

Safe campfires

When you're done with your campfire, always remember to soak it, stir it, and soak it again.
