Due to recent rain and lower temperatures, the wildfire danger level is low in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
Temperatures are expected to increase by the weekend. It doesn't take long for grass and small twigs to dry out, always ensure you're exercising caution when conducting any burning activities. Remember that fire permits are required for any burning other than a campfire.
There have been 6 wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area since January 1, 2025. If you see smoke or flame in the forest please call 310-FIRE (3473) to report it.
Hazard reduction burns
Hazard reduction burns (HRBs) have not been conducted for the past few days due to strong winds and high temperatures. Yesterday, the rain helped to bring down the risk of increased wildfire behaviour, creating better conditions to potentially complete a hazard reduction burn today.
A HRB may take place in the Gregoire Lake Reserve area this morning and afternoon, as long as conditions remain ideal. You may see smoke and crews working in the area.
The planned areas are:
Amoco Meadow: A 6.98-hectare section, south of Amoco Road and east of Twp Road 854A.
- Amoco Field: A 1.09 hectare section, west of Amoco Road.
Firefighters constantly monitor the weather to assess if controlled burns can be done safely. HRBs are completed as an effort to reduce wildfire risk by removing fuels from the landscape. These burns are only completed by experienced firefighters, with the support of helicopters.
As we start getting consistently warmer temperatures and grass turns from brown to green, our window for hazard reduction burns start to close. At any time, if weather conditions become too hazardous, the burns will not be completed. See the hazard reduction burn pamphlet for more information.

Fire permits
Fire permits are free and can be requested online, for any burning other than a campfire. You may also request your fire permit by calling the Fort McMurray permit line at 780-743-7125.
Stay informed of fire restrictions and bans by checking Alberta Fire Bans.
Off-highway vehicles (OHVs)
Off-highway vehicles can cause wildfires. Remember to carry firefighting equipment such as a small shovel, collapsible pail or fire extinguisher.
Safe campfires
When you're done with your campfire, always remember to soak it, stir it, and soak it again.
