Flood mitigation studies

Engineering studies and flood mitigation and restoration projects for Alberta's most flood-prone river basins.

Highwood River Basin Flood Mitigation Project

Budget 2015 included funding for critical local mitigation projects in High River, to protect the town and downstream areas during flood conditions.
As per the recommendations of Dutch research foundation Deltares, a diversion of the Highwood River will not go forward. This decision gives Town administration the clarity it needs to design and build the southwest berm, a key section of an upgraded system of flood barriers in High River.

Deltares found that a more environmentally-sustainable and cost-effective flood mitigation strategy for High River is to remove more obstacles from the river channel to increase the amount of water that can safely flow through the town.

Engineering studies

Draft reports on engineering studies to review and assess flood mitigation options for Alberta's most flood-prone river basins.

Provincial Flood Damage Assessment Study

  • Provincial Flood Damage Assessment Study
This study updated/developed flood damage curves in select communities at risk of flooding to 2014 economic values and established adjustment indices for their use in different flood prone communities across Alberta. It also developed a computerized model for estimating flood damages and undertook flood damage estimates for select communities throughout Alberta.

City of Calgary

The City of Calgary was identified as a high priority centre and selected as the pilot municipality for the updating of flood damage curves and development of a Rapid Flood Damage Assessment Model.

2013 Flood studies and projects

River Forecast Centre Lessons Learned Summary Report (Dillon Consulting)
River Forecast Centre partners were engaged in discussions regarding the 2013 floods events in order to gain a better understanding of what occurred in each community, how each group responded, and what they have learned.

Following the June 2013 flood, the province set up the $11.5 million Backcountry Trail Flood Rehabilitation Program to restore and repair backcountry trail systems.
