Introduction
The Film and Video Classification Act, 2009 and the Film and Video Classification Regulation are the legislation that defines the Government of Alberta’s role in film classification, exhibition and retail video in Alberta. Under this legislation, the Alberta government:
- provides mandatory classification services for distributors seeking to screen films in Alberta
- ensures film exhibitors and venues adhere to legislative requirements to display film ratings

Before you can screen a film in Alberta, you must first register with Alberta Film Classification.
If you screen movies for the public and charge admission, under the law you must display its Alberta film rating.
Film festivals, non-profits and community groups that wish to host film screenings must register and work with Alberta Film Classification.
