Overview
The Family Violence Death Review Committee was established in 2013 under the Protection Against Family Violence Act as part of the Children First Act and was deactivated on December 31, 2025. The Committee was mandated to provide a formal mechanism to review family violence deaths in Alberta.
The Committee:
- analyzed incidents/cases of family violence resulting in death
- identified systemic issues, trends, risk factors and patterns from the cases reviewed
- reported and made recommendations to the Minister of Children and Family Services for intervention and prevention strategies to support the reduction of family violence
Review criteria
The Committee reviewed all incidents of family violence deaths in Alberta that are related to intimate partner violence. From those incidents, the Committee selected cases for further in-depth review to represent different ages, cultures and ethnicities, relationship statuses and geographical locations in the province. The Committee maintained the autonomy to select which cases they will review in-depth; there was no referral process for case reviews and the Committee could not be compelled to review a specific case.
Compensation disclosure
Public sector bodies are required to post online the names and compensation paid to:
- all committee members
- employees who earn over a threshold amount (see Public sector body compensation disclosure)
This is a requirement under the Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act. The postings are required by June 30 each year and will be maintained for 5 years.

Reports
Annual reports
The Family Violence Death Review Committee published an annual report detailing the Committee’s work and family violence deaths for each year. The Minister is accountable to Albertans for the Committee's operations and for tabling the annual reports in the Legislature.
Case reviews
The Committee reported to the Minister of Children and Family Services, through public reports that analyze the circumstances leading to the deaths. The reports include the Committee’s recommendations to support the reduction and prevention of family violence, based on the case in question.
