Energy storage engagement

Stakeholders shared input to help inform Alberta’s energy storage policy.

Overview

We held technical discussions on energy storage policy with electricity sector stakeholders. These discussions will help inform potential legislative enhancements and provide regulatory clarity on this emerging technology.

Alberta is working to enhance its electricity system to maintain investor confidence, provide legislative and regulatory clarity for electricity agencies and ensure safe, reliable and affordable electricity for consumers.

Energy storage technologies can provide a variety of benefits to Alberta’s energy system, including:

  • helping to manage the variability of some renewable energy technologies
  • improving grid efficiency by storing excess energy
  • providing reliable backup power solutions
  • serving as a possible non-wires solutions for the transmission and distribution system
