Economic thresholds for insects attacking crops

Introduction

A common problem for agricultural producers is deciding whether or not to treat a crop for a specific insect pest. Economic thresholds can help them make these decisions by providing guidance on whether insect control can be expected to have an economic benefit.

The data in this section present thresholds recommendations for different types of crops.

Many economic thresholds currently in use are nominal – in other words, based on experience rather than research. The economic thresholds were compiled from various sources including guidelines published by the Western Committee on Crop Pests.
