For most Albertans, municipal drinking water systems are regulated through the provincial drinking water program which is legislated and managed by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (EPA). To learn more about this program, see:
Program components
Alberta’s drinking water program includes the following:
- Governing municipal drinking water systems through legislation, regulations and guidelines.
- Overseeing drinking water facilities, from approval and registration to compliance assurance, investigation and enforcement.
- Using proactive and preventative measures as well as emergency responses to safeguard a clean and safe water supply.
- Promoting sound fiscal planning and accounting for municipal water systems.
- Educating water suppliers and consumers to increase knowledge of provincial drinking water management.
