If you need to use a notarized document outside of Canada, you may require a certificate of authentication. This is known as an authentication and it confirms the notary public’s status, signature and seal.

If your require a certificate of authentication, you’ll need to forward your notarized document to the Deputy Provincial Secretary’s Office.

Get a certificate of authentication

Step 1. Gather your documents

When you submit your request, you’ll need:

  • the document that’s been notarized originally by a notary public
  • a written request for a certificate of authentication

Step 2. Choose your payment method

There is a $10 fee per document to get a certificate of authentication.

There are 3 ways to make your payment:

Online

A receipt will be emailed to you once your payment has been processed. Print the receipt and submit it with your document as proof of payment.

Mail

When submitting your application by mail or courier, you can pay by:

  • business cheque
  • personal cheque
  • money order
  • bank draft
  • credit or debit online – attach your receipt to your mail application as proof of payment

All payments must be made out to the Government of Alberta.

In person

If you’re submitting your document in person, you must pay in person at that time.

For in person submissions, you can pay by:

  • debit
  • cash
  • business cheque
  • personal cheque
  • money order

Step 3. Submit your document and payment

Mail or courier your notarized document, written request for a certificate of authentication, and payment to:

After you submit your document

If you submitted by mail

The certificate of authentication and the original document will be returned to you by regular mail.

It can also be returned by courier if you supply the prepaid shipping package.

If you submitted in person

When you submit your document in person, you can get your certificate.  Wait times will vary.
