Overview
Commercial carriers in Alberta can apply for exemptions to certain federal or provincial safety rules, such as hours‑of‑service limits. These permits are only available for specific types of operations and only when carriers meet all eligibility requirements.
These exemptions are meant to support unique operating needs while still protecting public safety.
Before you apply
Before submitting an application, review the permit types and conditions to make sure your operation qualifies. You must also confirm that your company can meet all compliance and eligibility requirements included in the permit.

Application review process
The Registrar reviews each permit application to determine eligibility. The review verifies if the carrier:
- maintains an 'Excellent' or 'Satisfactory' Safety Fitness Rating
- has a 'Satisfactory Unaudited' Safety Fitness Rating – the carrier may receive a shorter term permit with conditions so the Registrar can further evaluate the carrier's eligibility. In some cases, carriers may be asked to undergo an audit.
- has a history of non-compliance to NSC regulatory requirements, on-road safety issues or other compliance concerns
These factors are used by the Registrar to decide whether the carrier is eligible for a permit exemption.
