Overview

The Class 1 Learning Pathway Grant Program supported the commercial driving industry in Alberta by increasing the number of licensed Class 1 and 3 drivers, connecting them with employers and funding projects that will increase driver employment, attraction, retention and industry diversification.

Grant streams

The grant program was made up of 2 streams:

The Employment Pathway Grant supported the training and employment of Class 1 drivers. It enabled employers to get reimbursed for driver onboarding, training and certain professional development costs for Class 1 drivers.

The Industry Advancement Grant built capacity in the commercial transportation industry to address challenges related to employment, attraction, retention and diversification of Class 1 drivers.

Program goals and benefits

By addressing key challenges such as employment, training and retention, this program was aimed at building a more sustainable workforce by:

  • increasing employment of new Class 1 drivers (with fewer than 2 years of experience)
  • improving training and transferability of skills for new and future drivers
  • expanding the pool of future Class 1 drivers and generating interest in the professional carrier industry
  • boosting driver retention through employer support and mentorship connecting new drivers with transportation industry jobs
  • providing industry-specific training for new and future drivers
