Overview
To increase transparency in Alberta’s childcare system, the lookup tools below provide access to key information about childcare programs and certified early childhood educators. Families, providers and the public can use these tools to review a program’s compliance history, verify educator certification, and view enforcement actions such as stop orders and public notices. These resources support informed decision-making for families and regulatory accountability across the childcare system.
Childcare Lookup Tool
The Childcare Lookup Tool provides information on licensed childcare programs and family day home agencies, including 18 months of non-compliance history.
Early Childhood Educator Lookup Tool
Use the Early Childhood Educator Lookup Tool to find information about certified early childhood educators, including certification number, level, status, date of certification and any current terms or conditions placed upon their certification.
Staff working in licensed childcare programs must be provincially certified as an early childhood educator within 6 months of being hired. Uncertified staff cannot be left alone to supervise children.
Below are the 3 levels of early childhood educator certification and their training requirements:
More information on the education requirements, equivalencies and conduct requirements can be found in the Certification Guide for Early Childhood Educators.
Unlicensed Child Care Stop Order Lookup Tool
Under the Early Learning and Child Care Act, government can investigate complaints about unlicensed childcare providers when there is reason to believe that:
- the provider is caring for more than 6 children at a time (not including their own)
- there is an imminent threat to the health, safety or welfare of children in their care
If either of the above are confirmed, a legal directive to stop providing care, called a 'stop order', will be issued and enforced. In this situation, parents of children in the unlicensed program will be notified.
Use the Unlicensed Child Care Stop Order Lookup Tool to check whether an unlicensed childcare provider has been ordered to stop providing care in Alberta within the past 24 months or call Childcare Connect at 1-844-644-5165.
Administrative Penalty Lookup Tool
The Administrative Penalty Lookup Tool provides information on all administrative penalties issued in Alberta’s childcare sector. Administrative penalties are financial penalties issued to licence holders, early childhood educators and unlicensed care providers who fail to comply with legislation.
