The wildfire danger across the Calgary Forest Area remains low. More precipitation and cooler temperatures were noted across the area. The forecast is calling for a sharp increase in temperatures with very little moisture. As green up is now fully underway, the increase in wildfire danger will be more gradual.
Wildfires can still start and spread in cool and humid conditions. Please be diligent when extinguishing your campfires, be sure to soak it, stir it and soak it again.
Wildfires in the CFA
There is currently one active wildfire in the forest area. CWF-021 was reported on the afternoon of May 20 and is now considered under control. Crews responded quickly and contained the wildfire at approximately 2 hectares. It is an important reminder that wildfires can still ignite and burn, even in cooler conditions.
Since January 1, the CFA has responded to 21 wildfires which have burned 30.62 hectares.
Even with the cooler and rainy conditions, many campers braved conditions on public lands throughout the Calgary Forest Area over the long weekend. Unfortunately there were still several abandoned campfires that our crews needed to properly extinguish.
Even after a cool and wet weekend, this wildfire was able to grow to two hectares before being contained. It is an important reminder to remain diligent. CWF-021 was reported by both an Alberta Wildfire lookout observer and a public call to 310-FIRE.
