Overview
The Alberta Traffic Safety Fund (ATSF) provides funding support to municipalities under 2 funding streams:
- Stream 1 – Funding for traffic-calming devices or improved signage
- Stream 2 – Funding for an engineering or design study
The program objective is to enhance public safety on Alberta’s roads by providing funding to municipalities to implement traffic-calming devices or support engineering and design changes to intersections and roads with demonstrated safety risks.
Funding
The ATSF will provide $13 million over 3 years:
- $1 million in 2025-26
- $2 million in 2026-27
- $10 million in 2027-28
Stream 1 – Funding for traffic-calming devices or improved signage
- Municipalities can receive up to $250,000 in grant funding per eligible project.
- Municipalities are required to contribute a minimum of 50% of total project costs, with the province contributing up to 50% of total eligible project costs (up to a maximum of $250,000).
Stream 2 – Funding for an engineering or design study
- Municipalities can receive up to $250,000 in grant funding per eligible project.
- Municipalities are required to contribute a minimum of 50% of total project costs, with the province contributing up to 50% of total eligible project costs (up to a maximum of $250,000).
- Construction is not eligible under Stream 2.
Eligibility
- Eligible applicants - all Alberta municipalities including:
- cities
- towns
- villages
- summer villages
- counties
- municipal districts
- specialized municipalities
- Metis Settlements
- special areas
- Applicants must provide evidence of unsafe roads and/or intersections, including the proposed sites/locations.
- The project start date must occur after the ATSF project grant approval date.
Eligible expenses:
- direct project costs
- capital equipment costs
Ineligible expenses:
- operating or normal maintenance activities
- administrative activities
- GST
- financing expenses
- land acquisition
- legal fees

Step 2. Complete the application package
Fill out the Alberta Traffic Safety Fund Application Form.
All collision and injury data must be obtained from Transportation and Economic Corridors as the source for official traffic records in Alberta. For the latest official collision and injury data, email: [email protected].
If you are applying for Stream 1, include the following document in your application package:
- Completed certified engineering or design study, or equivalent documentation, that clearly demonstrates compliance with the outlined requirements and substantiates the need for traffic-calming measures or enhanced signage.
Step 3. Submit the application package
The application timelines are as follows:

After you apply
Applications will be assessed through a merit-based evaluation process by the ATSF Evaluation Committee. Approvals are subject to available funding.
Applicants will be notified in writing if their project is approved.
Once a project has been approved, the municipality will enter into a project grant agreement with Transportation and Economic Corridors.
Reporting
Municipalities are required to submit a detailed final report no later than one month after completion of the project.
If a project takes longer than 6 months to complete, municipalities are required to submit an interim report/extension request.
