COVID-19 Updates: Taking steps to return to normal.
On May 2, they were recognized for serving people experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta
The Fort McMurray Soup Kitchen serves up to 40 people experiencing homelessness every day. Most of its volunteers are seniors and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the regular volunteers are self-isolating. A dedicated core of volunteers has stepped up to ensure the Soup Kitchen keeps running.
Joanne Garnett, Lisa Vroom, Nicole Martyn-Dickinson, Nayef Maghoub, Reverend Keith Haberstock, Cecilia Sara and Mitchell Steeves are all dedicating time to the Soup Kitchen and balancing work and family responsibilities with their volunteer commitment. They are helping to fill gaps left behind by senior volunteers and leading efforts to recruit more volunteers.
