Photo of Alberta Northern Lights recipient Christopher Rogers

Location: Red Deer, Alberta

As the pandemic began putting added strain on front-line health-care workers at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, and the ranks of volunteers were depleted by health concerns, Christopher Rogers upped his game. With more than 10 years of experience at Red Deer hospital, this veteran volunteer began picking up additional shifts on the chart pack team.

The chart pack team assembles the patient information into a package for quick access by health care professionals. On any given week, Christopher will collate over 800 chart packs, but when circumstances changed, he was willing to exceed that impressive total. During the height of the pandemic, Christopher was on the job 4 days a week volunteering an average of 5 hours per shift. At that rate, he quickly amassed more than 500 volunteer hours with many more shifts to come.

As stated by the hospital’s volunteer coordinator, Christopher has demonstrated how one volunteer can make such a significant difference in their community – whether that community be a hospital, a city or your neighbourhood.
