Alberta Indigenous Court Work Program

Apply for a grant to fund Indigenous Court Work Program services.

Purpose and objectives

The grant funds Indigenous Court Work Program services:

  • provided by Alberta-based Indigenous communities and organizations
  • for a maximum of 3 years

This court work program makes sure Indigenous clients can get services in criminal, youth or family court that are:

  • fair
  • equal
  • culturally relevant

Objectives

Help Indigenous clients understand:

  • their right to speak for themselves or to ask for a lawyer
  • what the charges against them mean
  • how the criminal justice system or family court functions

Help staff working in the criminal justice system and family court understand Indigenous peoples’:

  • values
  • customs
  • languages
  • socio-economic conditions

Deal with misunderstandings between Indigenous clients and staff working in the criminal justice system and family court.

Eligibility

Applicants must be located in Alberta and be one of the following:

  • First Nations
  • Metis Settlements General Council and Metis Settlements
  • Metis Nation of Alberta
  • treaty organizations
  • Indigenous not-for-profit organizations

Ineligible applicants

  • municipalities
  • for-profit organizations
  • schools or school boards
