Overview
Francophonie Month is an annual celebration that aims to:
- highlight the presence and diversity of Francophone and Francophile communities
- promote the French language in Alberta
- showcase the work of Francophone organizations
- raise awareness of community and government initiatives
On March 1, 2018, the Government of Alberta officially proclaimed March as Alberta Francophonie Month. Since then, this period has helped bring communities together and promote Francophonie throughout the province.

- Location: Jasper Activity Centre and The Crimson Hotel
- This event was open to all students aged 5 to 18 (and their families) enrolled in a French program, as long as they could participate in all programming in French. Fluency in French was not required for the parents.
Francophone Newcomers’ Welcome Celebration
- Organizer: Communauté Francophone Accueillante de Calgary, supported by the Réseau en immigration francophone de l’Alberta.

- The Franco-Albertan Flag-Raising Ceremony brought the community together in a moment filled with pride, remembrance and celebration. As part of the ACFA’s centennial and Alberta’s declaration as 2026 being the year of the Francophonie, this symbolic ceremony highlighted the commitment, vitality and essential contributions of Francophones and franco-curious to the dynamism of our province.

- Launched in 1965, the Francophone collection includes more than 1,000 m of textual records, thousands of photographs, and a wide range of other materials documenting the history, development and daily life of Francophone individuals, families, businesses and associations. This exclusive behind-the-scenes tour, followed by a presentation of unique Francophone documents, brought Alberta’s heritage to life.

International Francophonie Day Ceremony

- The ceremony recognized Alberta’s declaration of 2026 as the Year of the Francophonie. The theme of this year’s ceremony was The Builders of Our Francophonie.

- Participants got their French on during our first ever FrancoFun Day at the RAM. They were transported by the stories of Roger Dallaire, and explored programs around the museum to learn more about Francophone communities living in Alberta.
Winter Carnival – Red Deer

- The Winter Carnival was a festive celebration that brought the community together around classic winter activities and Francophone traditions. Participants enjoyed outdoor games, cultural entertainment, music, family activities and tasty treats in a warm and welcoming atmosphere despite the cold. It was a special moment to highlight Francophone culture, encourage intergenerational connections and strengthen the community’s sense of belonging.

Study Day on Promoting the French Language in Universities

- This co‑modal study day focused on research, teaching, and language policies. The event was funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada as part of the project Promoting French in Higher Education in Canada as a Language of Creation and Knowledge Transmission (SSHRC Connection–Outreach).
Meet the Artist: Nawal Sekkat
