Overview
Under the Government Emergency Management Regulation, the Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) is required to assist local authorities with preparing, implementing and maintaining their emergency plans.
AEMA assigns Regional and First Nations Field Officers to liaise between Albertan communities at the local level and the province before, during and after emergencies and disasters.
AEMA Regional and First Nations Field Officers are available to assist by:
- providing guidance and feedback on emergency plans, tabletop and functional exercises, and relevant grant funding applications
- delivering AEMA-approved incident management training
- supporting local authority compliance with the Local Authority Emergency Management Regulation
- deploying to incidents across Alberta and contributing subject matter expertise to affected local authorities
- initiating requests for provincial assistance during an emergency or disaster response
AEMA Regional Field Officers
AEMA Regional Field Officers work with local authorities identified in the Emergency Management Act including:
- urban municipalities (cities, towns, villages, summer villages)
- specialized municipalities
- municipal districts and counties
- improvement districts
- Metis Settlements
- special areas
AEMA assigns at least one Regional Field Officer to each of the 7 AEMA regions.

AEMA First Nations Field Officers
AEMA First Nations Field Officers work specifically with First Nations communities on-reserve in Alberta, with support from Indigenous Services Canada to support their emergency management needs.
Alberta is home to 138 First Nations reserves, stewarded by 48 First Nations.
AEMA assigns at least one First Nations Field Officer to each of the 4 AEMA First Nations regions.
