Refugees may be eligible for health coverage under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) or the Interim Federal Health Program.
Refugees arriving in Alberta to live and hold a signed Confirmation of Permanent Resident document or a Permanent Resident Card issued by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) are eligible to apply for coverage under the AHCIP.
Refugee claimants who are living in Alberta and waiting for a decision from IRCC on their claim need to apply for health insurance coverage through the Government of Canada’s Interim Federal Health Program.
They are not eligible for coverage under the AHCIP.
Apply for the Interim Federal Health Program
Refugee claimants living in Alberta whose claim was approved by IRCC, and have received a Notice of Decision document deeming them a Convention Refugee, are eligible to apply for coverage under the AHCIP.
The Notice of Decision document is your proof of legal entitlement to be and remain in Canada.
