Support in resolving parenting disputes

Meet with a Caseflow Conference coordinator to get help with resolving your parenting disputes and avoid going to court.

Caseflow conference

This free service – known as Caseflow Conference – is for parents or guardians who have not yet reached an agreement on matters relating to their child(ren). It is a type of dispute resolution as an alternative to court.

At a Caseflow Conference meeting, a caseflow coordinator:

  • is a neutral third party (a person who does not take sides) who is professionally trained in dispute resolution
  • talks with the parents/guardians about possible resolution of child-related matters
  • provides information about dispute resolution, court processes and community resources

Caseflow coordinators cannot give legal advice.

A Caseflow Conference may be required if you are:

  • a self-represented litigant – someone who does not have a lawyer – in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer or Grande Prairie
  • applying for parenting, guardianship or contact access to a child

Otherwise, you can ask for this service if you:

  • have a lawyer
  • are applying for child support
  • are required to attend a dispute resolution program and a Caseflow Conference meeting would be the best fit for you

Full or partial agreements

If you and the other party reach a full or partial agreement at a Caseflow Conference meeting:

  • The terms of the agreement – things both sides agreed about – will be drafted for review by a justice, who will consider if they will grant a Consent Order based on the terms of the agreement, or if they have questions and would like to discuss the matter further with the involved parties.

Consent Orders can be prepared for:

  • child support
  • parenting
  • contact with a child
  • guardianship
