Introduction

Albertans living in rural and remote communities face unique challenges that require innovative and tailored supports and approaches to deliver safe, high-quality, sustainable and equitable health care services.

Alberta’s government is taking action to ensure that rural and remote Albertans have access to health care when and where they need it.

Rural Health Action Plan

The Rural Health Action Plan, 2024-2027 provides a strategic framework for achieving accessible rural and remote health care in Alberta.

With health equity as its foundation and ultimate goal, the Action Plan outlines key rural health priorities: Workforce, Access, Models of care, Community care, and Prevention and wellness.

Rural and Remote Family Medicine Resident Physician Bursary

The ‘Rural and Remote Family Medicine Resident Physician Bursary’ is a $16 million bursary program for family medicine residents committed to practising in rural or remote areas of Alberta.

The program aims to enhance care and support recruitment and retention efforts across the province. Applications are now open. The application period for 2024-25 and 2025-26 bursary program cohorts will remain open until the funds designated to this bursary program are fully committed. We will update this web page as information becomes available on the exact application opening and closing dates.
