Persons Case Scholarship

Overview

The Persons Case Scholarship is an annual scholarship that supports Albertans studying in the arts, humanities and social sciences fields whose work advances gender equality or who are studying in fields where their gender is underrepresented or disadvantaged.

Funding

• $100,000 is available for this scholarship.
• 40 students will receive $2,500 each for their studies.

Eligibility requirements

The Persons Case Scholarship is an annual program. Applicants can apply once during each intake.

Applicants must meet the below criteria to be considered eligible.

Eligible applicants:

• Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person (visa students are not eligible).
• Must be a resident of Alberta. To be considered, one of the following conditions must apply:
  • one parent, or legal guardian has maintained permanent residence in Alberta for at least 12 consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies.
  • Alberta is the last place the student has lived for 6 consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies.
  • the student’s spouse or partner has maintained permanent residence in Alberta for 6 consecutive months prior to the person attending post-secondary.
• Undergraduate students must be registered (full or part-time) in an approved post-secondary institution located in Alberta to apply.
• Post-Graduate Students registered (full or part-time) in a program may apply if they are a resident of Alberta even if studying at a post-secondary institution outside Alberta.
• There is no age limit.
• Applicants can apply to the Women in STEM, Persons Case and Women in Technical and Applied Arts scholarships. However, multiple scholarships cannot be awarded during the same calendar year.
• Previous applicants are welcome to apply. However, priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received the Persons Case Scholarship.

Ineligible applicants

• High school students – even those who have been accepted into an eligible upcoming program – are not eligible to apply. You must be a post-secondary student currently enrolled in and attending courses on a full or part-time basis.
• Students registered in short-term, part-time continuing education courses are not eligible to apply.
• Undergraduate students attending a post-secondary institution outside Alberta are not eligible to apply.
  • Post-graduate students can apply if they are Alberta residents as described above.

How to apply

Step 1. Read the guidelines

Step 2. Request a GATE Front Office account

• Once intake has opened, applicants may request an account via the link to the request page.

Step 3. Prepare supporting documents and information to upload in GATE Front Office

• The following documents are required as part of your application:
  • Proof of enrolment (must include official logo of post secondary institution, must be for current academic year and current term).
  • Two references (2 separate PDFs).
• In addition, you will need your:
  • Social Insurance Number
  • Alberta Student Number

Step 4. Complete your application for funding in GATE Front Office

After you apply

• Notifications will be emailed to the address provided when setting up your GATE Front Office account, approximately 3 months after intake deadline.
