Overview
We are gathering input to help inform potential updates to the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and regulation. Modernizing PIPA is important to ensure Albertans privacy protections remain strong, relevant and responsive to rapid technological changes and the realities of today’s digital world.
We engaged with Albertans in 2021 about privacy legislation and have been consulting with stakeholders since then. As the privacy landscape has evolved, renewed engagement is needed to confirm the relevance of past issues, align with Albertans’ expectations, assess impacts on private organisations, and incorporate expert insights to address key themes and avoid unintended consequences.
Get informed
The Personal Information Protection Act is Alberta’s private sector privacy law, governing how provincially regulated organizations collect, use and disclose personal information. It was introduced in 2004 and significantly updated in 2010.
Alberta’s Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship completed a review of PIPA in February 2025, and included 12 recommendations pertaining to the act. These recommendations provide a strong foundation for policy direction.
Findings from the privacy protection engagement in 2021 have also been an important reference for work to date, specifically strengthening the protection of personal information in the public sector.
Get involved
In February and March 2026, we are engaging with the public and with private sector organizations. This will help us gain insight into what should be captured in potential updates to PIPA, as well as what resources and information would support smooth implementation and ongoing compliance with potential legislative changes.

Stakeholder engagement

Outcomes
Public and stakeholder feedback will help inform potential updates to PIPA and its regulation to ensure Alberta’s privacy laws maintain a balance between protecting privacy rights and enabling private sector organizations to use personal information responsibly for business purposes.
Feedback will also inform updating resources and guidance posted on the PIPA web pages.
