As an economist, Calgary’s Dr. Thomas Cheuk knows all about risk and reward and has found that helping those at risk within his community comes with its own rewards.

Through his efforts with the Lions Club of Chinatown Hunger Program, Thomas is making a significant impact in the community – assisting seniors in need in Chinatown with the Bread and Rice delivery program.

Five times a week, Thomas collects surplus bread from local bakeries and grocery stores and distributes it to vulnerable seniors, particularly those aged 80 and over, ensuring that vital resources reach those who need them most. His focus on culturally sensitive foods for the Asian community highlights his sensitivity to the unique dietary needs and preferences of the individuals he serves.

Undeterred by even the harshest winter weather in Calgary, he has demonstrated his compassion and resilience in faithfully maintaining his deliveries to those in need. It is for this ongoing commitment and dedication to caring for his community that Dr. Thomas Cheuk is a recipient of Alberta Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition Program honours.
