Overview
NG911 will modernize emergency communication systems, significantly expanding the capabilities of traditional 911 services. NG911 will make it possible to provide additional details about emergency situations, including videos, photos, voice and text messages.
NG911 enhancements
NG911 is a necessary upgrade for the existing 911 system, which is over 30 years old. NG911 represents a multi-stage and transformative update to the traditional 911 system. This update will significantly enhance public safety communications services with brand-new capabilities, including:
- Real-time text (RTT) to 911
Canadians will eventually be able to send text messages to 911 during emergencies when they are unable to call 911. - Improved data delivery
Emergency communicators will receive more accurate and enhanced data about each call. - Enhanced location tracking
Multiple sources of information will be used to better locate 911 callers. - Greater system resilience
Reliability and cybersecurity will be enhanced, with backup capabilities should a failure within the system occur. - Future-ready features
Possible additions may include live emergency video calls and other advanced communication tools.
NG911 implementation
The existing 911 system has reached the end of its 30 year lifecycle.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has mandated that current 911 networks be decommissioned on March 31, 2027, requiring all public safety answering points (PSAPs) to transition before that date.
NG911 provides enhanced situational awareness and new opportunities for collaboration, interoperability and transformational change in 911 service delivery and emergency services operations.
