Overview

The Government of Alberta is committed to creating accountable, responsible and transparent local governments. We support municipalities to make local decisions and help ensure our communities are strong and healthy.

Sustainability tools

Legislation and other tools are in place to support the viability and accountability of municipalities.

The Municipal Government Act allows municipal restructuring that promotes viability including:

  • status changes
  • amalgamation
  • annexation
  • dissolution
