Morton’s Evaporation Tool

A tool that uses reliable, publicly available data to calculate evaporation rates for any Alberta township.

Overview

Evaporation data is essential for water supply assessment and water management in Alberta. Morton’s Evaporation Tool uses quality assured climate data to calculate evaporation rates for townships throughout Alberta.

The tool supports consistent, provincewide evaporation calculations and is an accepted method for estimating evaporation and evapotranspiration rates in Alberta.

How the tool works

Morton’s Evaporation Tool calculates evaporation and evapotranspiration rates using publicly available, quality assured data from the Alberta Climate Information Service.

The tool:

  • uses Alberta Climate Information Service gridded township climate data
  • provides provincewide coverage for all Alberta townships
  • supports daily, weekly and monthly evaporation calculations
  • allows users to export calculated data for further analysis

Morton’s Evaporation Tool is one of Environment and Protected Areas’ accepted methods for computing evaporation rates in Alberta.

It can be used by practitioners to support:
