Alberta population estimates
A population estimate is a measure of the number of people residing in an area at a particular point in time.
Highlights
These are the key highlights for the second quarter of 2026:
- Among the four largest provinces, Alberta recorded the strongest population growth in the second quarter of 2026.
- Net outflows of non-permanent residents (NPRs) continued to dampen international migration, although losses were smaller than in the first quarter.
- Alberta continued to lead the country in interprovincial migration, recording the strongest net inflow among all provinces.

Alberta population projections
Projections give a picture of future population based on trends. Visit the Alberta Population Projections Dashboard for the latest long-term interactive projection.
Highlights
- Alberta’s population is projected to reach 7 million adding roughly 1.9 million residents over the next 26 years between 2025 and 2051: an average annual growth rate of 1.3%.
- The majority of the expected growth (81%) will be due to migration, with 62% coming from international migration and 19% from interprovincial migration. Natural increase is also projected to contribute 19%.

2011 National Household Survey highlights
