Overview
Grizzly bear management by Alberta’s government is supported by innovative research programs at the Foothills Research Institute and several universities.
Researchers are currently investigating a number of topics, including:
- new ways to monitor grizzly bear population trends through time
- the effectiveness of relocation as a management tool
- the response of grizzly bears to changing forest landscapes
Advisory committee
The Grizzly Bear Science Advisory Committee was established in 2008 to help Alberta’s government identify grizzly bear research needs. The committee includes biologists and researchers from government and the following:
- Foothills Research Institute
- University of Alberta
- University of Calgary
- Parks Canada
Members meet annually to discuss research priorities and provide feedback to government on the status of recovery actions. These meetings also allow researchers to share interim results with ministry staff, explore additional opportunities for collaboration and develop research priorities.
