Overview
Alberta Education is working in collaboration with education partners to implement programs and initiatives to close the achievement gap between First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, and all Alberta students.
This includes work to:
- provide supports for First Nations, Métis and Inuit student success
- ensure all Alberta students are knowledgeable, understanding and respectful of the rich diversity of First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultures
- engage and support First Nations, Métis and Inuit people in fulfilling their vision for a Kindergarten to Grade 12 education system that honour Indigenous history, cultures, languages and perspectives
- build strong relationships with schools and school authorities; First Nations and First Nation organizations; the Metis Settlements General Council; the Métis Nation of Alberta; Indigenous and Northern Services Canada; and other ministries; to support the success of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students

First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education Directorate
The First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Directorate provides leadership and strategic direction to support the education system in closing the achievement gap between First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and all Alberta students.
The directorate also works to ensure all Alberta students and education professionals are knowledgeable and respectful of the rich diversity of First Nations, Métis and Inuit history, language and culture.
The directorate focuses on 3 key areas:
- Enhancing our commitment to First Nations, Métis and Inuit educational outcomes.
- Enhancing our functional capacity and support for current and future initiatives.
- Expanding our engagement with First Nations communities and education partners.
Engagement with First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities in Alberta is integral to the work of the directorate.
The First Nations, Métis and Inuit Policy Framework has been foundational to strengthen knowledge and understanding of First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives among all students; provide First Nations, Métis and Inuit learners with culturally relevant learning opportunities; and enhance reporting on the achievement of educational outcomes.
Memorandum of Understanding for First Nations Education in Alberta
This Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is an agreement between the Assembly of Treaty Chiefs in Alberta, the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada to work toward strengthening learning and educational success for First Nation students in Alberta.
Promising Practices
The Promising Practices in Supporting Success for Indigenous Students report provides a set of evidence-based practices that contribute to successful outcomes for Indigenous students. The study represents a partnership between the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
