Expert Panel on AI Impacts on Labour Markets and Post-secondary Outcomes

Alberta is establishing an expert panel to help ensure students are prepared for an AI-enabled future and success in a changing workforce.

Overview

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the work Albertans do and the way post-secondary education is delivered. Employers are increasingly seeking graduates with practical AI skills, while institutions are navigating the implications of AI for teaching, learning, research and academic integrity. To support Alberta's post-secondary system in responding, Alberta's government announced the Expert Panel on AI Impacts on Labour Markets and Educational Post-secondary Outcomes on May 21, 2026.

The panel, composed of post-secondary and industry leaders, is assessing how AI is being integrated into post-secondary education, identifying opportunities to better align graduate competencies with labour market needs, and developing recommendations to better prepare students for success in an evolving economy.

Panel mandate

There are 2 key paths the panel will explore regarding Al in the PSI system: 

  • operational efficiencies
  • educational outcomes

The panel will review and evaluate the incorporation of Al on post-secondary education including global competitiveness, as articulated in Goal 4 of the Alberta 2030 strategy. A specific focus will be on how Alberta PSI students are developing Al literacy. Another specific focus will be on the expected labour market impact of Al on PSI graduates. Finally, the panel will explore PSI educational outcomes, as it relates to Al usage in the classroom.

Stakeholder engagement

The Panel will conduct targeted consultations with relevant stakeholders in Alberta and internationally, including post-secondary institutions, students, large industries and employers in Alberta, and the AI sector.

Panel members

Panel Members have experience in artificial intelligence as well as competencies in higher education, machine learning, and research commercialization. Members of the expert panel are:

  • Nicole Janssen (chair)
    • Founder of Diffusion Advisory and Co-Founder and former Co-CEO of AltaML.
  • Stephanie Enders
    • Chief Delivery Officer at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), where she supports the advancement of AI initiatives and partnerships.
  • Neerja Gupta
    • Chief Advisor for Technology and Innovation Investments at Invest Alberta and a highly active entrepreneur and investor in the AI ecosystem.
  • Dr. Jessalyn Holodinsky
    • Director of Artificial Intelligence and Data Education and Ethics at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine.
  • Michael Lim
    • Senior Analyst at the Canadian Transportation Agency, specializing in airline finance, ownership control, and regulatory oversight and compliance.
  • Celia Wanderley
    • Chief Innovation Officer and Head of AI at Bits In Glass in Edmonton.
  • Aarn Wennekers
    • CEO and founder of Success Advisors, a consulting firm with a focus on governance, leadership and institutional strategy.

Outcomes

The Panel will provide advice and prepare a report for the minister on the responsible and effective integration of artificial intelligence within Alberta’s post-secondary system, including its impacts on educational outcomes, institutional operations, and labour market conditions. The report is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2026.
