Overview
We are gathering input on whether to raise speed limits on divided highways in Alberta. We want to know how Albertans feel about raising highway speed limits on divided highways by 10 km/h.
We are seeking Albertan’s opinions on whether the travel time savings from increasing the speed limit translates into broader economic benefits, if speed limit increases would improve people’s driving experiences and what people like about increasing speed limits.
If increasing speed limits goes forward, maximum speed limits would not be raised without first completing necessary safety improvements.
Get informed
Alberta’s provincial highway network includes over 64,000 lane kilometers (km) of paved highways, of which approximately 11,700 lane km are divided.
Raising speed limits on divided highways could reduce travel times and improve efficiency for the travelling public and industry.
Mini trial
Following a review of the survey results, Alberta’s government plans to conduct a mini-trial of a 120 km/h speed limit to assess the impacts of higher speed limits on divided highways. The trial will include strong monitoring to assess driving behaviour.

Online survey
Complete the online survey by December 12, 2025.
Outcomes
All public and stakeholder feedback received during engagement will be used to inform the government’s decision on whether Alberta should raise the posted speed limits on divided highways.
