Defending Alberta’s provincial priorities

The Provincial Priorities Act, 2024, (Bill 18) requires provincial entities to obtain prior approval from Alberta’s government before entering into, amending, extending or renewing an agreement with the federal government.

Status: The Provincial Priorities Act, 2024, received Royal Assent on May 30, 2024
Ministry responsible: Executive Council

Overview

The Provincial Priorities Act, 2024, (formerly Bill 18) supports Alberta’s government in pushing back against overreach by the federal government.

The Act will require provincial entities to obtain prior approval from Alberta’s government before entering into, amending, extending or renewing an agreement with the federal government.

The legislation will be implemented through supporting regulations, which will set out the approval process, any requirements to be met before a provincial entity may enter into an agreement with the federal government as well as any exceptions to the legislation.

Supporting regulations will be developed based on input from stakeholders.

Next steps

Comprehensive stakeholder engagement will take place in summer 2024.

It is anticipated the legislation will come into force in early 2025 once the regulations are finalized.
