Common Business Number program in Alberta

A federal, 9-digit business number is assigned after forming a corporation or non-profit organization, or registering a business name.

Overview

Alberta is one of the more recent provinces to partner with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to provide federal business numbers for newly created corporations, non-profit organizations, and unincorporated businesses such as sole proprietorships and partnerships.

A federal business number allows access to a number of federal and tax programs, along with some provincial programs. There is no cost to obtain a business number.

How to apply

Step 1.

Provide your corporation, partnership or sole proprietorship information to a Corporate Registry Service provider including:

  • your business name information
  • Business Name Report (if used)
  • valid ID
  • fee payment

Non-profit companies, societies and religious societies should send their fees and documents, including information about the organization’s directors, to Corporate Registry.

Step 2.

If your information meets the requirements, it will be entered into the Corporate Registry and you will get a proof of filing.

You will receive an email when your federal business number is issued, unless one has previously been assigned to you as an individual or corporation. In that case, you will use the business number you already have.

Most out-of-province corporations that do business in Alberta already have a federal business number, so no additional steps are necessary.
