Bison Conservation Agreement engagement

Albertans shared their feedback on a draft Section 11 agreement to protect wood bison herds.

Overview

We gathered feedback on a draft conservation agreement with the Government of Canada under Section 11 of the Species at Risk Act to protect and conserve the Ronald Lake and Wabasca wood bison herds.

The draft conservation agreement outlines actions needed to protect these wood bison herds, which are presently facing an imminent threat to their recovery.

Your feedback on the agreement will help inform and finalize critical measures needed to:

  • address the threat of disease transmission from bison in Wood Buffalo National Park to other bison herds in Alberta
  • minimize future habitat loss and degradation
  • investigate and implement additional approaches to improve the population status of both herds
  • address information gaps, monitor populations, and assess effectiveness of conservation measures

Outcomes

Your feedback informed additional negotiations between Alberta and Canada regarding the Section 11 agreement. While the agreement has not yet been finalized, wood bison have been listed as threatened under Alberta’s Wildlife Act.

Alberta’s government has begun developing a wood bison recovery plan with specific actions to protect wild populations and support conservation and recovery efforts. Learn more about the wood bison recovery plan engagement.
