All-season resorts - Nominations

Overview

The Government of Alberta is seeking information about locations that may have potential for future all-season resort development opportunities.

The All-Season Resorts Nomination Process is a time-limited opportunity for municipalities, tourism organizations, developers, investors, Indigenous peoples and Albertans to identify locations and share information that can help government understand future tourism and recreation opportunities.

How nominations may be used

Information submitted and collected through this process helps government:

  • identify areas that may warrant further review, study and assessment
  • understand tourism and recreation interests
  • gather information about potential opportunities
  • support long-term planning

About the nomination process

Alberta’s government is seeking information about locations across Alberta that may have potential for future all-season resort opportunities.

  • Types of submissions

The nomination process collects two types of submissions:

    General Interest Nomination

A General Interest Nomination allows a person or organization to identify an area that they believe has tourism or recreation potential and should be considered by government.

You do not need to be a developer or have a development proposal to submit a General Interest Nomination.

    Advanced Concept Nomination

An Advanced Concept Nomination allows a municipality, Indigenous community or organization, tourism organization, investor, developer or other potential proponent to submit a more developed concept, study area or opportunity and provide additional supporting information.

An Advanced Concept Nomination does not need to be a complete development proposal. Supporting studies and documents may be included if they are available, but are not required to submit a nomination.

  • Who can submit a nomination

Anyone may submit a nomination during the intake period. This includes:

    • businesses
    • community organizations
    • destination management organizations
    • developers
    • Indigenous organizations or individuals
    • individuals
    • investors
    • municipalities
    • recreation organizations
    • tourism organizations

Anyone may submit a General Interest Nomination. The Advanced Concept Nomination is intended for organizations or individuals that have a more developed concept, study area or opportunity and wish to provide additional information for government consideration.

  • How nominations may be used

Information collected through this process helps government:

    • identify areas that may warrant further study
    • understand tourism and recreation interests
    • gather information about potential opportunities
    • support long-term planning

Government will review submissions after the intake period closes. Further review will consider factors such as:

    • Community and collaborator compatibility
    • Economic viability and market potential
    • Environmental suitability and sustainability
    • Infrastructure and servicing capacity
    • Location and accessibility for the public
    • Natural setting and recreational assets
    • Strategic alignment with existing legislation, policies and plan

The department may choose to explore the potential for a nominated location to be designated under the All-season Resorts Act. Any potential site will be evaluated and assessed as per the All-season Resorts Policy and All-season Resorts Designation Administration Policy. What the nomination process is not

The nomination process is not:

  • a development approval process
  • a designation or land use change process
  • an Expression of Interest process
  • a public vote
  • a decision on any specific location
  • a commitment by government to advance a nomination location

Submitting a nomination does not give the submitter any rights to, or priority over, the nominated land. Information collected through this process will propose areas that may help identify locations that could be considered for future designation under the All-Season Resorts Act.

Submit a nomination

The online form will ask you to select either a General Interest Nomination or an Advanced Concept Nomination. Additional questions will appear if you select the advanced option.

  • Before you submit

Please review the following information before submitting a nomination. A nomination:

    • is voluntary
    • is non-binding
    • does not create development rights
    • does not reserve land
    • does not establish government support for development

Locations identified through this process are in no way guaranteed to proceed beyond the nomination stage. Future consideration of any location would require additional evaluation and review.
