When it comes to the history of Trochu and area, William Cunningham wrote the book – literally – and the former school teacher is dedicated to creating awareness of the community’s past with present and future generations.
Having taken on the mantle of town historian, a role previously held by his mother, William’s passion for the community and its history is unwavering. William has lent his time and talent in support of the local historical society and museum for years as president, archivist, researcher, tour guide and when needed, janitor.
A retired teacher who spent his entire career in Trochu, William is still doing his part to educate community residents and visitors alike, using his skill as a writer to document the contributions of Trochu’s veterans during World War II in two carefully researched publications. Bringing that history alive in a very real sense, William accompanied local students to Vimy Ridge near Givenchy-en-Gohelle, France and the site of Canada’s historic World War I victory.
Williams love of history is rivalled only by his dedication to his community which he has served as town councillor and deputy mayor and as coach of the local volleyball team.
For his efforts in honouring the past and helping to build a stronger community for the future, William Cunningham is a most deserving recipient of Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition.
